The Program
Now in our 15th year, the ESL Summer Language Institute offers the student an integrated skills course in American Culture, and intensive training in spoken as well as written English that helps prepare the student to be mainstreamed into regular academic coursework. This intensive training includes pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary expansion. New students are strongly encouraged to participate in the ESL Summer Language institute before beginning school in the fall. Since many of our summer participants plan to continue their education at Monte Vista in the fall, the five-week summer program is the ideal environment for an international student to become accustomed to American education, the dormitory, the school environment, and to obtain a thorough evaluation for proper placement in the fall. In order to provide in-depth instruction, the faculty-student ratio is ideal. Students are tested upon arrival and grouped according to their proficiency level.
The Campus
Since its founding in 1926, Monte Vista has provided an outstanding education experience for its students. Situated in the heart of the beautiful Monterey Bay area of California, the spacious and picturesque campus is nestled in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The campus occupies 100 acres of rolling lawns, ponds, playing fields, equestrian facilities, and more than 25 buildings. Facilities for summer use include a library, classroom complex, dining room, gymnasiums, tennis courts, swimming pool, outdoor amphitheater, and girls and boys dormitories. The comfortable rooms provide ample study area. The boys dorm has a large common area with fireplace, state of the art satellite TV/DVD/surround sound system, several computers with internet access, two recreation rooms, interior courtyard with ping-pong and nearby basketball court. The girls dormitory has a large lounge allowing students a place to relax and converse with one another, fireplace, several computers with internet access, satellite TV, piano and ping-pong. The immediate outdoor lawn surrounding the dorm also provides an area for students to relax or study.
Morning | Afternoon | Evening | Weekend
The weekday schedule includes a 6-hour day of instruction by ESL instructors. Participation in our interactive computer language lab activities helps to enhance the language learning process. The curriculum will include activities in drama, music, cooking, sports, swimming, and biking. Weekly field trips take place in and around the Bay Area.
Students continue to practice their English by taking part in leisure activities on our 100-acre campus and on off-campus trips. The resident deans plan weekend activities consisting of local town trips and recreational activities: Santa Cruz Beach & Boardwalk, Raging Waters, Bay Area fun trips, and Outlet shopping.

Student Standards
As a Christian educational institution, Monte Vista has a concern for all aspects of a student's life and character, as well as the intellect. Students are expected to observe high standards of conduct, have respect for the property of others, have high morals, and refrain from the use of alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. Monte Vista challenges each student to cultivate his/her spiritual development.
Faculty to Student Ratio
ESL classes will be approximately 5 to 10 students per teacher.
