July 7 - August 9, 2014Co-ed, ages 12 - 16Monte Vista Christian School's Summer English Language Institute (SELI) offers students from around the world the opportunity to experience living in a residential community, and to improve their English skills by attending intensive English as a Second Language classes. Because our class sizes are small, students experience the benefits of individual attention and intensive ESL practice. Students quickly form close relationships with teachers, counselors and each other.
We have designed our program to accommodate students with beginning, intermediate, and advanced level English skills. Students are tested and grouped according to their English language proficiency levels. Students will have the opportunity to learn American customs, and to travel to cultural and entertainment attractions through the Monterey Bay, Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. The SELI Program is a wonderful introduction for students to become accustomed to a private boarding school environment.
The SELI program can give students a great advantage when preparing for and continuing their education in American schools. Students will have a final evaluation before they depart.CAMPUS FEATURES - Clean, Secure Dormitory - Air-conditioned Classrooms - 100 acre (40.5 hec) campus - Sports fields, Equestrian Center - Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts, Gymnasium This program is open to students ages 12 to 16 years old who want to learn and improve their English skills. Your child should be prepared to work hard and be ready to grow academically and emotionally. As students experience American culture, they learn more than just language, they discover how to become responsible global citizens.
Equity, diversity, inclusion and international understanding are deeply embedded in the School's philosophy. Our program is not suitable for students with significant behavioral problems. Housing-Residential
Students will be housed in double room in one of our dormitories. With the guidance of trained dorm supervisors who share the dorms, students learn to make adjustments necessary for communal living. Living closely with other young people from widely differing backgrounds is one of the most rewarding experiences of SELI. For students who will soon be faced with the responsibility and independence of a private boarding school or college life, a summer of living in the dorm provides ample opportunity for developing self-discipline, time management skills, and respect for others.
The program offers 4 hours of comprehensive English studies per day, designed to develop the following skills: English Conversation • Reading & Vocabulary • Pronunciation & Listening • Writing & Grammar.Activities & Field Trips
Many learning experiences exist outside the classroom. Balancing classroom study with field trips is one of the important aspects of our program. Our students love discovering beautiful Northern California through activities around the San Francisco area and beyond.
Some of the activities students may participate in include: Monterey Bay Aquarium • San Francisco Overnight Tour • Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk • Mall Tour • Museums, Movies, Dances and Skating.List of 2013 Trips (click here)Meals
Our dining services use fresh ingredients to offer students healthy meals. Our cooks provide a well-balanced menu that includes cuisines ranging from Asian and Italian to Mexican and American dishes. In addition to buying food from local California farmers, we use vegetables from our organic
garden. Meals are served cafeteria-style in the dining hall and include unlimited helpings of wholesome food.
Our kitchen service strives to preserve and protect the environment by offering foods produced in a way that does not harm the environment or animal welfare. Highlights include: organic produce, meats and poultry that are antibiotic free; milk is rBST (hormone free) and cage-free eggs; and reduced sugar, salt and fat choices. Students will also eat at local restaurants while on field trips.
