Introducing Timothy Johnson
Our new Instrumental Music Director- Timothy Johnson, began playing the violin at the age of 7 and comes from a musical family of church musicians in Fresno California. Throughout his early career, Mr. Johnson studied with Betty Iacovetti, concert-mistress of the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and Professor of Violin at Fresno State University Fresno; he is a professional violinist and fiddler and is proficient on all stringed instruments and also several brass instruments.
Mr. Johnson served as the Concertmaster of the Fresno Junior Philharmonic from 1973 to 1976 and was the youngest violinist hired to perform with the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977 under Maestro Guy Taylor. In 1977 Mr. Johnson won his first regional Fiddle contest in Fresno, California and in the same year he won the Western states Assembly of God Instrumental contest on Violin. From 1977 to 1982, Mr. Johnson was a private instrumental instructor in California and Arizona and served as an instrumental church soloist through California. From 1980 to 1982 Mr. Johnson served as concertmaster and youth choir Director under Pastor Tommy Barnett at the Phoenix First Assembly of God with a membership of over 14,000.
From 1982 to 1984, Mr. Johnson served on staff as the Minister of Music at Dayspring Church in Oklahoma City where he met Steve Sharp, our current headmaster here at Monte Vista Christian School, who was also on staff at Dayspring Church at that time. As Music Director at Dayspring, Mr. Johnson recruited trained and performed- with his choir and orchestra musicians- weekly concerts and large Christmas and Easter productions as well as leading worship. During this time, Mr. Johnson performed with numerous Christian artists such as Phil Driscoll, Larnelle Harris, William Harness, and the Stallnecker family.
From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Johnson attended Bob Jones University in Greenville SC as an undergraduate music-education student. In addition to serving as concertmaster and performing major Opera and string quartet repertoire, he also won the prestigious Instrumental commencement competition in 1992 on Violin performing Symphony Espagnole by Eduard Lalo.
From 2000 to 2007, Mr. Johnson was the fiddler and guitarist for the nationally acclaimed Cowboy vocal trio, The Sons of the San Joaquin. During this time, Mr. Johnson toured throughout the United States with "The Sons" performing weekly concerts in concert halls, schools, colleges, churches and significant concerts, such as Carnegie Hall in NYC. In 2006, Mr Johnson was inducted, along withThe Sons into the Western Music Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City and in 2006, he was also voted Instrumentalist of the year by the Western Music Association.
Mr. Johnson has performed on stage with numerous celebrities such as Wayne Newton, Smoky Robinson, Roy Rogers Jr., B.J. Thomas, Mr. T, Brooke Shields, John Belushi, and Dan Ackroyd. Mr. Johnson is the Founder and Director of two performance-based Chamber orchestras; the Merced College Orchestra 2006 to 2009, and Oakhurst Community String Orchestra from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, Mr. Johnson also created and designed a new grass-roots music program for the Big Picture High School in Fresno, CA. From 2012 to the present, Mr Johnson has performed weekly concerts with his band, Sierrariders, at the Oakhurst Lutheran church and served as the Music-Pastor and Bandleader for these services.
Mr. Johnson is an Alumni of Central Union High School in Fresno, attended Bob Jones University in Greenville SC- and completed his undergraduate/Music Education requirements with Violin Proficiency. Mr. Johnson holds a BA in Business Management with emphasis on Development of Music Artists from St Marys College of Moraga. He also holds an MA in Music Education from Fresno State University- Fresno and has completed his Post-graduate doctoral work toward a DMA degree from Boston University in Music Education. As a composer and arranger, Mr Johnson has composed and performed numerous secular and sacred works for Chamber and full Orchestra.
As a Music Educator, Mr. Johnson is committed to the work of Christ and in developing the music careers of our students here at Monte Vista Christian School. He is excited to join the MVCS family and looking forward to further development of our Instrumental music program. Mr. Johnson also enjoys spending time with his wife Linda, daughter Madison and enjoys hiking, especially in the Yosemite National Park area.
