Friday School | September 29
Friday School is an opportunity for students to get the support they need in managing their coursework. Our first Friday School of the year is on Friday, September 29 from 2:25 pm - 3:45 pm. If assigned, Friday School takes priority over all extracurricular activities.
Students can be involved in Friday School in three ways:
-
They can proactively choose to attend to get additional help.
-
They can be required by one or more of their teachers to attend. Students will receive an email to their MVC account on or before Monday, September 25. Parents will be copied on the email.
-
They can be required to attend based on their grades. If they have a D or F, they will be required to attend. We will check them in at the ARC (Middle School students in the Middle School Quad) and send them to classes in which they have failing grades to work with their teacher.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
One of the ways MVC will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15) will be to highlight our faculty, staff, and students who have Hispanic roots through a slideshow display in the Café. If you would like your child to be recognized or would like to recognize a family member who is Hispanic, email a picture and a short bio or description of something you would like to highlight from your Hispanic heritage to Jaime Huerta by Friday, September 29.
Water System Update
MVC continues to work with local and state regulators to lift the Boil Water Advisory order we are currently following. Students should continue to bring water to drink each day, as drinking fountains and water bottle filling stations are unavailable. However, so that students can stay hydrated, drinking water is available in the following locations at no charge: Café, Health Station, The Study, Teacher Workroom, Equestrian Center, ARC, and Auxiliary Gym. We understand this is inconvenient, and sincerely appreciate your ongoing flexibility and understanding. We are working diligently to resolve the issue while keeping the safety of our campus community our top priority.
Homecoming Game Backup Plan
As reported in our local press, MVC’s October 20 Homecoming football opponent Santa Cruz High has regrettably had to cancel several games this year due to a lack of players. Although plans for MVC’s Homecoming Game are unchanged at this time, we will be prepared to reschedule it to Friday, October 27, and combine it with Senior Night if our October 20 game is canceled. In that scenario, we will keep as many of the currently scheduled student activities as possible. Watch future editions of The Mustang Flyer for updates.
Come Pray Together on Friday Mornings
MVC parents are invited to come pray for our students, faculty/staff, and school every Friday morning at 8:15 am at Moms in Prayer. If you can’t make it but have a prayer request, you can fill out this form. If you would like to pray from home, this week’s prayer sheet is here. Questions? Contact Coordinator Kristen O'Connor (mom to Harry '24).

Fill out this form to donate food/supplies, help set up/clean up, or both. Questions? Email Marjorie Schmidt.

Lost and Found
Many belongings (sweatshirts, water bottles, and gym clothes/bags) are left throughout campus on a regular basis. Labeling your child(ren)’s belongings will help us return the found items to the owner in a timely manner. Have your child(ren) check Lost and Found in the ARC for anything they may be missing, as we have quite a collection to be claimed.
iPad and Supply Care
In order to best care for and protect student devices, iPads are to be put away in backpacks during breaks, lunch, and during passing periods. However, accidents do happen, so we strongly encourage parents to insure their child(ren)’s device as an extra measure of protection. Labeling all student belongings, including Apple Pencils/styluses, is highly recommended, also, as many missing items end up in the Lost and Found.

Our Teens Making a Difference
Recently we’ve seen some beautiful expressions of care for one another amongst our students. In this letter, MVC’s Behavioral Health Counselor Erin Torr reminds us that teens, though often self-centered and myopic in their views, really do possess a strong desire to be part of things that matter. They want to make a difference in their world and are deeply affected when their friends are hurting.

In order to best care for and protect student devices, iPads are to be put away in backpacks at breaks, lunch, and during passing periods. However, accidents are known to happen, so we strongly encourage parents to insure their child’s device as an extra measure of protection. Also, labeling all student belongings, including Apple Pencils/styluses, is highly recommended, as we find a lot of missing items which end up in the Lost and Found.
What Book is Your Child Currently Reading?
As Language and Literature teachers work to foster a love of reading in our Middle School students and encourage all students to have a book for early finisher work, we have a lending library filled with books that students may borrow at any time. We welcome donations to keep this library stocked with age-appropriate reading material. Donated books will be reviewed but not read, so parents are asked to review any book(s) that their child borrows for content which aligns with your family values. Students may bring any youth book(s) he/she has read which need a new home - and hopefully new hands -- to the ARC.
Middle School ACCT Period
Students were introduced to the optional ACCT opportunities for Wednesdays and Thursdays. For your reference, here is the menu of choices available to our students on these two days. Keep in mind that students can access this menu through the Middle School Bulletin.
Home Football Games Student Supervision
We ask that Middle School students not remain on campus after school until the start of home football games. If for some reason your child is not able to get picked up or take the bus and must remain on campus, they are to be in the ARC or the Outdoor Student Center only, until the first game starts at 5:00 pm. All MVC school rules and dress code apply for the game.

An App You Should Know About
With the start of school, an app called Saturn has surged in popularity. Saturn is designed to be a calendar app that allows students to upload their schedule and connect with other students. There are some areas of concern around students sharing personal information, the potential for bullying, and the possibility of predation through unverified users. With the surge in popularity, Saturn has updated their verification process to only allow students but the exact process remains unclear. Should your child request it, please look into Saturn more and have a conversation about sharing their personal information and other risks that might come with the app.

We ask that all students who are not in extracurricular activities grab a snack and then head to the ARC until they are picked up. Students who have extracurriculars that don't start right after school should head to the ARC until their practice starts. After 3:45 pm, students should exit via Gate 4 and be picked up in the Senior Lot.
Car Line Drop-Off
Please review the drop-off and pickup route "car line" that takes place in the Senior Lot. This is where all student drop-offs before school (7:45 am - 8:25 am) and pickups after school (3:20 pm) happen. The campus opens for students at 7:45 am and closes at 6:00 pm. If you need to park in the morning, please use a spot that is unpainted. The painted spots are reserved for our Seniors who have been assigned and painted a spot.

Middle School
PHE Uniforms
All Middle School students, except those enrolled in Horsemanship, will need to be in uniform for Physical Health Education by the second week of the school year. For new MVC students, uniforms will be available to purchase on campus at our new student orientation, Taking Flight, on Tuesday, August 8. Returning students may purchase a replacement shirt, shorts, or both by visiting the ARC during the first week back to school and will be charged via FACTS. A uniform shirt and shorts are mandatory for PHE. If students wear a sweatshirt and/or sweatpants, each must also be MVC wear and can be purchased through the MVC website under Athletics (Mustang Gear). If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Morales.
Middle School Supply Lists
As you prepare for the school year, please look over the grade level supplies lists (5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade). Trouble finding any of the apps listed? Not to worry. Teachers will give more details in class as to where they can be found as each app is introduced throughout the year.
Schedule of Classes
Although Middle School students' schedules may now be viewable in Focus, classes and periods are subject to change. Please do not contact the school office until Tuesday, August 1 if you have questions regarding your schedule. Students should check back on Monday, August 7 to confirm final placements. If printing your schedule, be sure to do so after August 7 for an accurate schedule.
Equestrian Opportunities
Horsemanship courses are now available during the school day for all levels through our partners at Trinity Rivers Equestrian; experienced or beginner riders are encouraged to participate. Students can earn PHE credit. Contact Melissa Morales to add this class or start by using this link to register (click the drop-down menu option under Trinity Rivers Equestrian on the left-hand margin). Want to start riding now? Trinity Rivers is also part of White Rock Stables, and after-school, weekend, and summer opportunities are available. Get more information here.
Save the Date! Middle School Family Picnic
All Middle School families, including 5th Grade, are invited to join us on Saturday, August 26 from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm for a Middle School Family Picnic on the quad. Bring a blanket and a picnic for your family to enjoy. MVC will provide beverages and sweet treats, as well as the pool and other fun lawn activities for the whole family. Interested in helping us plan the fun? Contact Melissa Morales on or before August 6 to volunteer!
