Don Price Performing Arts Chapel

The Board of Directors of Monte Vista Christian School is pleased to announce construction of the Don Price Performing Arts Chapel will commence upon final permit approval, anticipated in October 2018.

We are grateful to MVC’s current leadership, including Head of School Dr. Mitchell Salerno and his administrative team, who have worked tirelessly over the last eighteen months to make this step possible for our school and, more importantly, our students.

All past, present, and future MVC Mustangs are invited to learn more about this historic project and track its progress here on this web page over the projected 18-month construction schedule.

Thanking God for His provision,

Michael Tunink ‘84
Chair, Monte Vista Christian Board of Directors

This $10 million facility will provide a long-awaited gathering and performance space that will seat 450 for chapel services, performing arts events, and school community gatherings. In addition to a fully equipped theatrical stage, state-of-the-art sound and lighting resources will allow the nearly 500 MVC students involved in the arts to perform at the top of their craft. The facility will also house spacious learning areas for both instrumental and vocal arts groups, curricularly and extracurricularly.

Throughout his 38 years as headmaster at MVC, Don Price consistently cast a vision for what a chapel and performing arts facility could mean for Monte Vista and its students. Don understood the key role the arts can and should play in a well-rounded Christian education, and was faithful in keeping this need before the MVC community. It is, therefore, both a joy and a privilege for Monte Vista Christian's current leadership to honor Don's leadership and vision by naming this new facility in his honor.

MVC is committed to achieving excellence in fine arts instruction, both in visual and performing arts. Nearly 60% of our student body participate in these opportunities. In the words of one MVC parent, “My four children are all different, but one thing I love about MVC is that there is an artistic opportunity for everyone. My son learned he loved ceramics. My daughter has developed her singing voice, and she also turned into a budding photographer. Our whole family enjoys the plays and concerts, and the quality of last year’s art show was simply stunning.”

Letter from Dr. Salerno, Head of School

Dear MVC Family,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! Our MVC team has been preparing all summer for your student(s) to arrive on campus. We are excited to see all that’s in store for your sons and daughters this year as we equip them to reach their highest potential through Christ-centered educational excellence.

With that core mission in mind, I’m writing to share some special, long-awaited news that will allow MVC to equip our students at a whole new level of excellence. If you’ve been a part of our school family for any length of time, you’ve no doubt heard about a dream initiated many years ago by Don Price, MVC’s second head of school and son of founder R.O. Price. Inspired by a love of music and an appreciation for the key role the arts play in a holistic educational experience, Don longed to see a chapel/performing arts center on campus.

Over the course of the last two years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside MVC’s Board of Directors to bring Don’s sixty-year vision to fruition. It is with excitement and joy that I announce that this fall, Monte Vista Christian School will begin construction of the Don Price Performing Arts Chapel. This 16,600 sq. ft. building will house two large classrooms for our choir and instrumental programs, as well as a fully equipped theater with multi-purpose seating to accommodate up to 450 people.

We’ve added a new page to our website - - on which you will find an artist’s rendering of the Don Price Performing Arts Chapel, a floor plan, and a plan outlining the exterior renovations included in this historic project. As you will see in the drawings, the plans include removal of the large asphalt area in front of the current Theater and along the new building. This key component means that in addition to much-needed performance and gathering space, this project will further enhance and unify our beautiful campus.

Construction will begin on or around October 1, pending completion of the permit process with Santa Cruz County. We project a construction timeline of approximately 18 months and anticipate occupancy in time for the 2020-2021 school year, if not sooner.

Even as this project honors Don Price, plans are underway to renovate what will be known as the Martha Price House, where Martha lived up until her passing this past May. The Martha Price House will hold MVC’s administrative offices and allow the current office space to be converted to classrooms, replacing the S Building classrooms that will be demolished to make way for the new building.

More details about these projects will be shared in the days and weeks to come. For right now, I invite you to join me in thanking God for His faithfulness in realizing this long-held vision for our school. We stand on the shoulders of generations of Monte Vista Christian students, teachers, and leaders, and are humbled by the honor of taking this step to move MVC boldly to the next level of Christ-centered educational excellence.

I also invite you to mark August 29 and/or September 5 on your calendar. This year’s HS Back to School Night and MS Back to School Night, respectively, will begin with a 6 pm groundbreaking ceremony, during which we will dedicate this undertaking to the furtherance of MVC’s mission, vision, and values listed below.

Please join me in celebrating this historic moment in MVC’s 92-year history by praising God for His faithful provision.
